Son sets mother on fire in Manjeshwar, cites financial stress as motive

Manjeshwar: In a shocking incident at Vorkady, a man allegedly poured petrol on his mother and set her ablaze, resulting in her death. The accused, identified as Melvin Monteiro (33), is the son of the deceased Hilda Monteiro (60), wife of late Louis Montero. Manjeshwar police are conducting a thorough investigation into the case.

According to police sources, the accused, who was unemployed and facing financial difficulties, had reportedly asked his mother to mortgage a piece of land and lend him Rs 1 lakh. When she refused, he is said to have committed the murder in anger.

Police confirmed that the accused is being subjected to detailed interrogation and will be produced before the court after the investigation.

The District Superintendent of Police, along with the dog squad and fingerprint experts, visited the crime scene for examination. The deceased’s body was taken to Pariyaram Medical College Hospital for a postmortem.
