The deadline for the ongoing internal reservation survey for Scheduled Castes has been extended to May 25, with Udupi district already achieving 95.75% completion, said Deputy Commissioner Dr. K. Vidyakumari during a press meet on Saturday. She added that the district is on track to achieve 100% coverage within the next few days.
As per the 2011 census, the district has 15,329 Scheduled Caste families, out of which 14,941 families have already been surveyed. Among 3.14 lakh non-SC families, 2.5 lakh have been covered so far.
The survey began on May 5, with 1,112 enumerators deployed for field work. A helpline centre has been set up at the district level to assist citizens. The special camp period has been extended from May 26 to 28, and online self-declaration can now be submitted until May 28. The district has also reported classification ambiguities between the Mera and Mansa communities, and a proposal has been submitted to the state government to include these in the Adi Dravida category.
Dr. Vidyakumari also spoke about the “Podi Andolana” being conducted by the Revenue Department, aimed at surveying Bagar Hukum lands and regularizing them. Officials are visiting sites, conducting surveys, and issuing RTCs (land records) for eligible lands. However, she noted complaints of locals not allowing surveyors access. “Such obstruction must be avoided. Landowners should clear approved lands and allow survey of disputed portions. Government land will be reclaimed post-survey and given a separate survey number,” she emphasized.
