A horrifying case of a failed relationship took a deadly turn in Dakshina Kannada district on Monday when a man stabbed his former lover and then died by suicide in the same rented house. The incident occurred in Daiyadka near Sujeer village, leaving the local community in shock.
The deceased has been identified as Sudheer (30), a resident of Kanjilakodi in Kodman village. The injured woman is Divya alias Deekshitha (26), a resident of Daiyadka in Sujeer, who is currently undergoing treatment at Wenlock Hospital, Mangaluru.
Love, Conflict, and a Fatal Confrontation
According to sources, Sudheer and Divya had been in a relationship for nearly eight years. However, the couple had parted ways a few months ago following personal disagreements. Despite the breakup, Sudheer allegedly continued to call and follow Divya, even threatening her once via WhatsApp.
On the morning of July 6, a heated exchange occurred between the two over WhatsApp. The following day, around 11 a.m., Sudheer visited Divya’s residence, knowing she would be alone. He reportedly insisted that she marry him. An argument broke out, during which Divya called her mother to inform her of the situation.
As the fight escalated, Sudheer allegedly pulled out a knife he had brought with him and stabbed Divya multiple times on her back and leg. She attempted to flee but collapsed after losing consciousness. Believing she had died, Sudheer went to a nearby room in the same house and hanged himself.
Neighbours Alerted by the Chaos
Neighbours rushed to the house after sensing something was wrong and were horrified to find Divya lying injured and Sudheer’s body hanging. Divya was immediately taken to Thumbay Hospital and later shifted to Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru for further treatment.
Past Behaviour and Warnings Ignored
Sudheer was reportedly employed at a garage and had previously climbed a mobile tower threatening suicide, suggesting a history of emotional instability. Divya’s family had been renting the house in Daiyadka for over eight years. Her mother, Pushpa, works in a local hotel, and Divya herself worked in a bakery in Farangipete. She had taken leave and was home alone on the day of the incident.
Pushpa had reportedly warned her daughter to call if Sudheer turned up, especially after he sent threatening messages on July 6. Divya is the eldest of three siblings. Her sister works at a private company, while her younger brother has been working abroad for the past year.
The Bantwal Rural Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident. Authorities are also examining Sudheer’s past behaviour and the couple’s relationship history as part of the probe.
