A 29-year-old Indian-origin man has been charged with murder in California after allegedly stabbing a registered sex offender to death in what police describe as a targeted attack.
Fremont Police said officers were called to Upper Vintners Circle shortly before midday on 18 September after reports of two men fighting. They found 71-year-old David Brimmer lying on the ground with severe stab wounds. Despite efforts to save him, Brimmer died at the scene. A knife was recovered, and the suspect, identified as Fremont resident Vishnu (Varun) Suresh, was arrested immediately.
Investigators later revealed that Suresh had targeted Brimmer after finding his profile on California’s public sex offender registry . Brimmer had been convicted in 1995 of committing lewd acts with a child and had served nine years in prison.
'Deserve to die'
Court documents and police statements describe Suresh as a man fixated on punishing sex offenders. He allegedly told detectives he had wanted to kill one “for years” because “they hurt children” and “deserve to die,” Fox affiliate KTVU reported.
According to investigators, Suresh searched profiles on the Megan’s Law website, taking screenshots of offenders’ details, including Brimmer’s, less than an hour before the killing. He reportedly posed as a CPA going door-to-door with a bag and notebook to appear legitimate before approaching Brimmer’s home.
Suresh told officers he confirmed Brimmer’s identity, shook his hand, and then launched the attack, chasing the 71-year-old through neighbouring streets and into a stranger’s home before fatally stabbing him in the neck and throat.
The suspect’s words and history
Police say Suresh showed no remorse after his arrest, describing the murder as “honestly really fun.” He told detectives he did not plan to escape, adding: “I’m hoping that because [the victim is] a pedophile… it should be cool.”
Authorities revealed that Suresh had a prior arrest in 2021 after making a false bomb threat and claiming he was “hunting” the CEO of Hyatt Hotels, whom he believed to be a paedophile.
Fremont Police confirmed Suresh has now been charged with murder, burglary, and causing great bodily injury. “This kind of vigilante justice is not the right thing,” local resident Manny Singh told reporters. “I think it’s more of a mental health issue.”
