Elon Musk is not working regularly from the White House, the New York Post reported, as White House chief of staff Susie Wiles confirmed to the Post that she is coordinating with Elon Musk on the phone. Wiles said it is not making much of a difference workwise but Elon Musk is not in the White House physically.
The Department of Government Efficiency staff are, however, not going anywhere and they continue to work in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building next to the West Wing.
Elon Musk's entry to the administration was with a bang as soon after Trump's inauguration on January 20, Musk started working as a special government employee from the White House. His DOGE chainsaw cut hundreds of jobs to minimize spending while he started attending cabinet meetings and accompanying Trump on various occasions. His apparent exit just makes a whimper as Elon Musk started dropping hints that his DOGE work is nearing its end -- and before the 100 days of the Trump administration, Musk already packed and left the White House.
Elon Musk's Tesla had a rough time because of his government stint. Hundreds of Tesla cars and properties were attacked, set on fire by protesters who want to take down Elon Musk. Musk did not clarify whether his decision to exit the government was hastened by the protests but he said he would be spending more time on Tesla now and less time on the government work.
“He’s not out of it altogether. He’s just not physically present as much as he was,” Wiles said.
“The people that are doing this work are here doing good things and paying attention to the details. He’ll be stepping back a little, but he’s certainly not abandoning it. And his people are definitely not," Wiles said.
Musk is officially expected to step down in May but he would remain an adviser to the administration. As a “special government employee,” Musk is not supposed to work more than 130 total days for the government this year.
During a Tesla earnings call earlier this month, Trump informed his investors that he would spend a day or two on DOGE and rest for his other businesses. “Starting next month, I’ll be allocating far more of my time to Tesla, now that the major work of establishing the Department of Government Efficiency is done,” Musk said.
