Dubai slashes travel time by 40% between Sheikh Zayed and Al Khail roads with major upgrades

Send Push
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed a series of significant upgrades aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing congestion between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road via Al Meydan Street. These changes come as part of the RTA’s wider plan to enhance road connectivity and support Dubai’s ongoing growth and vision for sustainable transport.

Key Road Improvements
One of the main upgrades involves widening the exit from Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Meydan Street. Previously a single lane, this exit has now been expanded to two lanes, increasing its capacity and easing the bottleneck that drivers often experienced during busy periods.

Additionally, the bridge over the First Al Khail Road has been widened to four lanes. This expansion is designed to boost traffic capacity substantially and has already resulted in a notable reduction in travel times.

The RTA also focused on the connecting ramps between the surface road and the First Al Khail bridge, doubling their width. This upgrade significantly improves the flow of vehicles accessing both Al Khail Road and Al Meydan Street, especially during peak hours when congestion tends to build up.

Significant Impact on Traffic Flow
Among the most impactful changes is the expansion of Exit D69. This exit’s capacity has doubled from 1,500 to 3,000 vehicles per hour, enabling a much smoother exit from Sheikh Zayed Road to the surrounding network. According to RTA reports, these enhancements have led to travel time reductions of up to 40 percent during rush hours. Vehicle queues have also been cut in half, improving the overall driving experience for thousands of commuters daily.

Part of a Larger Vision
These upgrades form part of the RTA’s ambitious master plan to roll out more than 75 traffic improvement projects throughout 2025. The goal is to support Dubai’s rapid urban growth while ensuring mobility remains seamless, efficient, and sustainable.

The RTA’s ongoing commitment to upgrading critical road infrastructure reflects its focus on meeting the needs of the city’s residents and visitors alike, helping Dubai maintain its reputation as a global leader in transport innovation.
