NEW DELHI: Parameswaran Iyer , India's executive director to World Bank group , has been named the country's temporary nominee on the board of International Monetary Fund.
His appointment comes days before the crucial meeting of IMF board to decide on a $1.3 billion support to Pakistan, which is being opposed by India in the wake of the terror attack in Pahalgam . Govt is of the view that funding to a country that backs terrorists should not be allowed.
Iyer steps in after Krishnamurthy Subramanian was suddenly sacked as India's nominee for raising questions that were not seen to be in line with the policies and amid allegations of impropriety by the economist in promoting his latest book.
Iyer is a civil servant who quit his government job to take up an assignment at the World Bank and returned to push Modi govt's sanitation programme . He was also CEO of NITI Aayog for a short time.
