Former MLS player Aaron Boupendza tragically passed away at 28 after falling from the 11th-floor balcony of his apartment in Hangzhou , China, on April 16, 2025. Boupendza, who had been playing for Zhejiang FC in the Chinese Super League , died after reportedly being involved in an argument with his brother before the incident. Authorities are investigating whether it was an accident, homicide, or suicide, and Boupendza’s brother may be questioned as part of the inquiry.


FC Cincinnati , the MLS club where Boupendza played in 2023, expressed its sadness in a statement: "Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and loved ones. He was a loved member of the FC Cincinnati family, and we offer our condolences."

Boupendza, born in Gabon, was known for his goal-scoring abilities, having played in multiple leagues including France, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, the U.S., and China. He began his career with Gazélec Ajaccio in France, before making a name for himself in Turkey, where he was the league’s top scorer with 43 goals. After joining FC Cincinnati in 2023, he scored seven goals in 24 appearances. He later moved to Zhejiang FC in China.


The Gabonese Football Federation mourned his loss, calling him "a great striker who made an impression." The Chinese Football Association also sent condolences, pledging to focus on player health .



Zhejiang FC proceeded with a league match hours after Boupendza’s death, sparking outrage from fans who felt the game should have been postponed. The match ended in a 2-2 draw, with fans holding up Boupendza's jersey in tribute.
