Man's 'unthinkable' acts leaves girlfriend with serious sinus infection for 7 years

While one might remember their former romantic interest due to a kind act they did, or with memorabilia such as photos, a woman in America has been remembering her ex-boyfriend because of the long-lasting infection he gave her.

Yes, in a video going viral on the internet, a woman shared that she has been suffering from a relentless sinus infection for the past seven years whose causal reason remained undiagnosed by doctors until they took culture samples from her nose.

The tests revealed that she has an E.coli infection which she said is a parting gift from her former boyfriend. “E. coli is from poop,” said Christine Connell whose viral TikTok video has garnered more than 436,000 views.

However, what makes the video viral and the online community baffled is not her diagnosis but how she got the infection. Connell revealed that she got infected from her boyfriend's farts that she was forced to inhale as she was immobile due to ankle surgery.

“How does that get in your sinuses unless you have a boyfriend who farts disgustingly and you are forced to inhale it because you are immobile after ankle surgery?” she said.

How did a fart lead to an E.coli infection?

In an update shared later, Connell revealed the whole story. She said that she and her former beau were in a hotel room with two queen-sized beds while she recovered from the operation on her ankle.

She was under the covers, all snuggled up, when her ex, standing naked between the bed, turned his back towards her and farted. “I’ve never, ever, ever smelled anything that compares to that,” said Connell.

E.coli is a group of bacteria often found in the intestinal tracts of healthy humans and animals, as per the CDC. While most strains of the bacteria are harmless some can cause illnesses such as diarrhoea, pneumonia, sepsis and in rare cases such as Connell's, a sinus infection.

“I don’t think it is common,” she said. “It can happen, it has happened before, but it’s definitely rare.”

The bacteria is commonly spread when bacteria from faeces get into the mouth through contaminated food, water or by touching dirty surfaces.

“I had just had ankle surgery that I was recovering from, so I imagine that my immune system was focused on healing that,” she explained. “I think that maybe in another circumstance, like if I had been healthy, it wouldn’t have happened.”

Sinus infections, or sinusitis, which happens when the tissue lining of the sinuses gets inflamed and flooded with fluid are common among Americans. Mostly, doctors suggest antibiotics and nasal sprays, however, in Connell's case these don't seem to work.

In a follow-up TikTok she revealed that since the antibiotics weren't working, she would be getting surgery.

“They’re going to use general anaesthesia to go up there and physically scrape off where the bacteria has been and really wash it and get all of the infected tissue out of there,” she said.
