Ranbir once shared that while he always wanted to be a director, working with many talented directors in the film industry has made him realise how hard and selfless the job of directing is.He said,"Acting is tough, but it’s far easier than directing a movie. My grandfather, at the age of 24, directed, acted, produced, wrote, and edited a film - Aag. I’m 42, and I still don’t have that kind of courage. I did produce a movie, Jagga Jasoos, which didn’t work at the box office, but I definitely have a burning ambition to direct. I’m waiting for the right story to come along because I believe a director should only make a movie when they truly have a story to tell, not just for the sake of making a film.I realised that the opportunities for being an actor came easily. I come from a privileged setting, I had the opportunities, and I didn’t want to take that for granted."

Ranbir joked that he has buried all his short films because they were so terrible. When asked which of Raj Kapoor’s films he would like to remake as a director, Ranbir said, “I would have directed every film in a different way, but all of them would have been atrocious. I don’t believe in remakes; I think every film is made to the best of its capabilities and should not be touched, especially Raj Kapoor’s. But I would love to have a take on Shree 420 - it is my favourite film.”
