Ranchi's Christian community gathered in large numbers to observe Good Friday, commemorating Jesus Christ's crucifixion and his sacrifice for humanity's salvation. Churches across the city witnessed significant attendance as faithful observers united in prayer and fasting.
At St. Mary's Cathedral and neighboring churches, the day commenced with silent congregations and Biblical readings. The 'Three Hours Agony' service, considered the most sacred observance, was held from noon to 3 PM, marking the hours of Christ's crucifixion. Worshippers contemplated the seven last words of Jesus, accompanied by hymns and prayers.
"Good Friday reminds us of Christ's universal love. His suffering teaches us humility, forgiveness, and resurrection's hope," said Fr. David Xalxo of St. Mary's Cathedral.
The Cross veneration ritual saw devotees paying respects by kissing or touching the crucifix. Many attendees were visibly moved during the emotional service.
"This day of silence and prayer helps us remember Jesus's sacrifice and reflect on our lives," shared Sunita Kujur, a worshipper.
Young participants also joined the observance. "Though solemn, this day renews our hope and symbolizes good's triumph over evil," said Rumi Toppo, an Ursuline college student.
Devotees, dressed in traditional white mourning attire, maintained a contemplative atmosphere throughout the day. The observance included: Silent prayer gatherings, Biblical readings, three Hours Agony service, Cross veneration and Hymns and reflections.
As the day concluded, the faithful community looked forward to Easter Sunday's celebration of resurrection, embodying the belief that suffering leads to hope and death to eternal life.
The city's Christian community demonstrated their deep faith through this solemn observance, marking one of the most significant days in the Christian calendar.
