Faridabad: Three days after they attacked a groom who later died, the bride and her lover were arrested in Faridabad. Three other accused are on the run, police said on Sunday. The assault took place on Thursday (April 17). The victim's family said the couple, who had got engaged on April 15, were to get married on April 19. Saurav of Tigaon and Sonu of Ghitora in Baghpat (currently residing in Tigaon) were nabbed for killing Gaurav, a resident of Soti village, near the IMT roundabout. The duo, along with other accused, allegedly beat up the victim black-and-blue. Gaurav succumbed to his injuries on Saturday (April 19) — the day of the wedding — after which murder charges were added to an FIR filed earlier. A court remanded them to police custody for four days.

A police officer said Saurav had been in a relationship with the woman for the past four years and wanted to marry her. "Both were teachers at a private school in Tirkha Colony. However, her family arranged her marriage with Gaurav. Enraged, Saurav, along with his accomplices, plotted the assault and attacked the groom, Gaurav, on April 17," the officer said.

According to the complaint filed by Premchand, father of the deceased, Gaurav's engagement had recently been fixed with Sonu from Trikha Colony. Shortly after the marriage proposal was accepted on March 28, Saurav and Sonu warned Gaurav not to go ahead with the marriage and even threatened to kill him. The matter was temporarily resolved with a mutual understanding between both parties, as Gaurav had reported the threat to the police. A relative said the duo were also called to the police where they had apologised for the incident.

However, on Thursday (April 17) night, while Gaurav was returning home after work, he was intercepted near the IMT turn in Soti village by Saurav, Sonu and others. The group stopped his vehicle, attacked him and robbed him of his ring and gold chain. Based on Premchand's complaint, a case was registered at the Sadar Ballabhgarh police station for theft and assault. Police also recovered the vehicle used in the crime.
