Train journeys make for a great day out with many routes offering stunning landscapes through a range of locations. Those after the perfect journey this summer need look no further.
The Bluebell Railway showcases locomotives from the golden age of steam trains. It runs along the border from East to West Sussex, set against a backdrop of countryside and railway bridges. The route covers a total of 11 miles, from Sheffield Park to East Grinstead, and takes around 40 minutes to complete.
To board the train, passengers must duck into wobbly wooden carriages that are over 100 years old. They can push the windows down to feel the thrill of riding on an old train while admiring the local villages.
The Bluebell Railway became the longest heritage railway line in the UK in 1994. It boasts a collection of vintage steam locomotives and carriages which were preserved from service on British Railways.
The railway was given a £2.8 million National Lottery Heritage Fund in 2008 which was used to build waterproof storage for 17 vintage carriages. A museum was also built, as well as new facilities for the crews and a rainwater catchment system.
On its website, The Bluebell Railway says: "Each station on our line showcases a different era, from Victorian to the 1950s, allowing you to step back in time and immerse yourself in history."
It adds: "During your visit, engage with interactive exhibitions that educate about the history and science of the industrial age, experience the thrill of getting up close to a working steam locomotive, and luxuriate in the comfort and style of a bygone era."
The railway staff also dress in period clothing and there are original signal boxes. Families can also relax in picnic areas while there are play areas for children.
The railway has a number of positive reviews on TripAdvisor. They praised the attraction as "magical" and a "must-visit for any railway enthusiast".
