Penny Lancaster was warned by her husband Rod Stewart that they "can't carry on like this" after she was experiencing unexpected symptoms. The 54-year-old has opened up about her experiences with her health in her book, Someone Like Me, but speaking further on Davina McCall's podcast Begin Again, she explained that on one occasion she "blew a fuse" and knew she needed to get help.
Speaking about finding out she was perimenopausal, she explained that there would be "blow ups" between Penny and her son, but then they would immediately start crying, hugging and making up.
She added that she noticed she was "burning up" and then her temperature would drop and she would be freezing cold. Outside of this, she would also start getting frustrated over dinner, and then one evening a "fuse blew" when she saw her sons rowing.
Penny told Davina: "Rod comforted me, he didn't know what it was so he couldn't help me or fix it. But he said, 'We've got to get to the bottom of this, you can't carry on like this. We can't carry on like this'."
She said in that moment she knew she needed help and went to a doctor, but they didn't recognise it was perimenopause.
After going to the appointment and crying throughout, she said the doctor told her that she should go onto antidepressants, so she did -- but she soon felt like it got worse.
Lancaster explained that she started taking them and felt they "numbed" her and she couldn't be happy.
It wasn't until she was speaking with the Loose Women ladies that she discovered it was the menopause, not depression.
Penny praised her husband for how he dealt with it all as Davina said that she was thrilled to see Rod with Penny when talking about the menopause. But she said the rocker has always stood up for the underdog.
Penny added: "As a rock star, to talk about being vulnerable, about those insecurities and taboo subjects, seeing how I'd been manipulated and taken advantage of by men, whether it's my ben, by the system, or by society."
Rod had been incredibly supportive of Penny when she first went to the doctors, but later joined her in the campaign about the menopause which saw her talk in front of Parliament in a bid to give HRT to women for free, which didn't come to fruition.
