As bills creep up across the board, finding small ways to save can help make a significant dent in outgoings. A phone contract is one expense that's easy to overlook. Anyone looking to trim their monthly spend, switching to a SIM-only plan is one way to cut costs without going on a data diet.
SMARTY is running a'double data'promotion on its £10 a month plan, giving customers 80GB instead of the usual 40GB for the same price, alongside unlimited calls and texts. The brand is known for its 'no annual price rises' policy, shaking the trend of the constant increases levied by the biggest networks.
Another of SMARTY's benefits compared to other mobile networks is that EU roaming is included (up to a fair use limit of 12GB a month). This is somewhat of a rarity since the UK left the European Union.
EE, for example, charges up to £2.59 a day for roaming in its Europe Zone, so costs can quickly add up even for short trips. Since SMARTY plans are rolling and customers can cancel anytime, it's often cheaper to subscribe for just one month if a customer's day-to-day network charges for roaming.
Various other plans are available from SMARTY, too. Our tech editor, Harriet Morphy-Morris, reviewed SMARTY for its £20 unlimited data SIM plan, with up to 12GB of EU roaming for free, while abroad in Barcelona for The Mirror.
She said: "I spent a full two days in Barcelona, posting Instagram stories, using Google Maps, booking restaurants and taxis without paying extra - all thanks to a £20 unlimited data SIM." They added: "The connection speeds were snappy and, apart from a few underground metro stops, we didn't have trouble connecting to 5G anywhere in the city."
The good news about changing phone providers is that it's easy to keep the same number. All that's required is a PAC (Porting Authorisation Code) that can be obtained by texting 'PAC' to 65075 for free. This code allows the new network to transfer an existing number to a new SIM.
As for other mobile networks, Giffgaff offers a range of cheap SIM-only deals with 18-month contracts, including unlimited data for £15 per month, down from £25, though its monthly rolling contracts are more expensive. Up to 5GB of EU roaming is included in each plan.
For another option, iD Mobile is currently offering 60GB of data for £10 per month on a rolling contract. Those willing to lock in a two-year contract can get 40GB for £7 a month, but there are many other plans available to suit different data needs. iD Mobile also includes up to 30GB of roaming in 50 destinations worldwide.
Many customers are happy with SMARTY, however, having left positive feedback on TrustPilot, where the mobile network has over 44,000 reviews - 67% of which are five stars. One said: "Been with SMARTY for a number of years and never had a problem. Excellent value for money."
Another agreed: "Great company to deal with. Lots of different plans which are very competitive. Must be one of the cheapest in the marketplace. So easy to change from the previous provider. Have been with them for more than a year."
A third added: "What can I say, but rollover monthly payment, cancel anytime. No pressure. Great value for money. Free roaming abroad on your contract. I have tried most of the other mobile companies, but SMARTY beats them all. I would definitely recommend them."
Some did encounter setbacks, with one person saying: "The network is fairly good, but could be better." A second left a four-star review, adding: "All good experiences, but found setting up voicemail over-complicated."
