Caroline Flack's former boyfriend Lewis Burton has broken his silence in a rare statement about the late television presenter, following the release of a heart-wrenching documentary about her death.
Lewis has decided to speak out about her passing to "clarify the situation" after the airing of a new documentary about her tragic end.
In an Instagram post, Lewis stated: "Out of respect, I've chosen to remain silent. However, the false accusations and online abuse directed toward me and my family has gone too far.
"I had hoped it would never come to this, but now I have no choice but to clarify the situation and share the truth."
Despite not appearing in the documentary, the director and producer revealed at a media screening that Lewis was contacted but declined to participate, reports OK!.
Series producer Sophie Clayton-Payne disclosed that they had reached out to Lewis. "We contacted as many people as possible," she said.
"We contacted Lewis right from the beginning and we said 'We'd love to talk to you off-record just for research purposes [to] understand your perspective on everything.'
"We also invited him to take part in the series, on camera. He declined to take part."
It is speculated that he may have been subjected to trolling on social media since the two-part series aired on Monday.
Some of Lewis' comments are included in the documentary through quotes captured on police body cameras from the night he and Caroline had a confrontation in December 2019.
Lewis initially told police officers he might have been struck by a lamp or a fan, before confessing he wasn't certain what had happened. He subsequently agreed with Caroline that it was his mobile that had been used and shared this version on social media.
In the fresh documentary, Caroline's mother Christine is determined to clarify that it's a "myth" that a lamp was ever part of the incident.
On the evening of December 12, 2019, Caroline and her boyfriend Lewis Burton had both been out separately before returning home to bed together.
Caroline's mum Christine reveals in the programme: "They got back, and Carrie said, funnily enough, their cabs drew up at the same time, and they came in, and they'd both had a bit to drink. So she said we were laughing and joking.
"And they went up to bed, and she said Lewis fell asleep, but then his phone went. She picked the phone up, and there were texts from another woman."
Caroline's solicitor Paul Morris then continues the account: "Caroline had found out that there were messages from a third party on the phone. She was upset.
"She was holding on to the phone. It was the confirmation of her worst fears, and she kept it in her hand, and with that, she's trying to wake Lewis up.
"It's a firm gesture, but the phone's in the hand. He was frustrated that she'd accessed his telephone. She was upset at what she'd seen on the phone."
After noticing his head was bleeding Lewis threatened to call the police and then did call 999. Caroline was screaming 'If you call the police I'm done'. He allegedly argued back and called 999.
Caroline's friend Mollie Grosberg revealed: "I don't know if he really intended to do that (call 999) but it was a very charged situation, and they were absolutely wasted."
Caroline, a London-born celebrity who was raised in Norfolk, devastatingly ended her own life in February 2020 at just 40 years old, after learning that prosecutors intended to pursue an assault charge following the incident with her partner Lewis in December 2019.
Lewis never sought this case and was insistent this was an isolated incident where she lost control and did what she did, which she acknowledged.
