
'Tis the season for harvesting apples - the perfect time of year for a heartwarming and indulgent apple crumble.
As we descend further towards months of cold wintery evenings, Mary Berry's ultimate apple crumble is sure to become a comforting staple. The simple but decadent classic British pudding is traditionally made by layering cooked, soft apples with a crunchy, crumbly mixture of flour, butter, and sugar. There are plenty of recipes out there, but Mary's takes top spot.
The easy six-ingredient recipe from Mary's book has received rave reviews.

The Silver Spoon Company's Baking Mad even put Mary's recipe up against Jamie Oliver's, and a clear winner emerged. Reporting that while both recipes were really simple to follow and easy to shop for, in terms of appearance, taste, and the end result, Mary's won on all three fronts.
Those who've given Mary's Apple Crumble a go have enjoyed surprising friends and family with the indulgent dessert. One reviewer reports, "turned out fantastic, my husband said it's the best he's ever tasted." Another commented, "It was lovely, made some for my neighbours and they were impressed," followed by a 'perfect' emoji.
You can always, of course, experiment with substituting the apples with rhubarb or even plums and raisins. Serve up the finished masterpiece with custard - or even ice cream or crème fraîche if you're feeling extra indulgent.
Baking Mad even suggests adding cinnamon.
Here's the complete recipe from Mary Makes It Easy:
Ingredients:
Cooking apples, peeled, cored and roughly chopped (1.5kg)
Butter (30g)
Light muscovado sugar (175g)
Plain flower (175g)
Butter, cut into cubes (115g)
Demerera sugar, plus a little extra to sprinkle (55g)

You'll also want to have a 25cm round shallow overproof pie dish and a wide-based pan to hand.
Method:
Start by preheating the oven to 200 degrees Celsius. Pop your apples in the pan, add 2 tablespoons of water and the butter.
Cook over a gentle heat for about 6 minutes, until tender, stirring regularly.
Remove from heat, stir in the sugar, and set aside to cool.

Now it's time to make your crumble topping. Simply measure the remaining ingredients into a large bowl and rub them together with your fingertips until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
Spoon the cold apple into the pie dish and level the surface.
Sprinkle an even layer of crumble topping over the apple and sprinkle over a little extra demerera sugar.
Now for the final step, cook in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Lower temperature to 180 degrees Celcius and cook for a further 20 minutes until golden and bubbling.
