A deeply disturbing case of blind faith has emerged from Jambargatte village in Bhadravati taluk, located in Karnataka's Shivamogga district, where a woman lost her life after being brutally beaten in the name of exorcism.
Victim Beaten for Hours to 'Expel Ghosts'The victim, Geethamma (53), was taken by her own family to a local woman named Asha, who falsely claimed that Goddess Chaudamma Devi had appeared to her and given her divine powers to drive out evil spirits.
Believing Asha’s claims, Geethamma’s family sought her help to “cure” what they believed was possession by a ghost. What followed was a six-hour-long brutal ritual, during which Asha repeatedly beat Geethamma with a cane from 9 PM Sunday night till 3 AM Monday morning, claiming to drive out the so-called evil spirit.
Declared ‘Cured’ But Succumbed to InjuriesAfter the beating, Asha falsely told the family that Geethamma was now “free of the ghost.” But within hours, Geethamma’s condition worsened. She was rushed to Holehonnur Hospital, but succumbed to her injuries at around 1:30 AM on July 7.
Accused Arrested, Murder Case FiledFollowing the incident, the Holehonnur Police were alerted and arrived at the scene. The accused, Asha, was immediately arrested, and a case of murder has been registered against her.
Geethamma is survived by three children, now left to cope with the loss brought about by superstition and ignorance.
A Grim ReminderThis tragic incident is a stark reminder of the deadly consequences of superstitions and unscientific beliefs. Despite growing awareness and education, such incidents still persist in rural areas, where self-proclaimed spiritual healers exploit faith for personal influence.
Authorities have urged the public to reject blind faith and report any such incidents to the police immediately to prevent future tragedies.
