Researchers at the University of Göttingen proved that precious metals such as gold and ruthenium from the Earth's core are reaching the surface via mantle plumes.
German scientists have discovered ruthenium-100 in volcanic rocks, proving that precious metals from the Earth's core are coming to the surface with the help of mantle plumes.
A team of geochemists from the University of Göttingen in Germany made a surprising discovery in the volcanic rocks of the Hawaiian Islands. They found very high amounts of ruthenium-100 isotope in these rocks.
The ruthenium-100 isotope is mainly found in the Earth's core and not in the crust or mantle. Due to increased pressure in this part, mantle plumes are working to bring up precious metals from the Earth's core-mantle.
Mantle plumes are columns of extremely hot rock that rise from the boundary between Earth's core and mantle. They form volcanic islands (such as Hawaii). They push up material from below with extreme heat and pressure.
Mantle plumes bring metals trapped in the core such as gold, platinum, iridium, and ruthenium to the crust. The presence of ruthenium-100 is a geochemical evidence that it is found primarily in the Earth's core.
The presence of Ruthenium-100 in surface rocks has been scientifically documented for the first time. This is a direct indication that metals are leaking from the core into the mantle.
Dr. Nils Mesling, the lead researcher of the research, said that we have indeed discovered gold. This evidence proves that metals are being recycled from the core to the surface.
The Earth's core was formed over about 4.5 billion years ago. It contains about 99.999% of the Earth's gold and siderophile metals. This region is surrounded by walls of rocks hundreds of kilometers thick. It was considered out of reach till now, but the discovery of Ruthenium-100 is opening new avenues.
