Ahead of the upcoming Bihar elections, the Election Commission has announced a significant pay hike for its booth-level staff. The annual remuneration of Booth Level Officers (BLOs) has been doubled from ₹6,000 to ₹12,000 — the first such revision in a decade since 2015.
Alongside BLOs, supervisors involved in the voter list revision exercise (Special Intensive Revision or SIR) have also received a raise. BLOs engaged in SIR will now get ₹2,000 as an additional incentive, up from ₹1,000 earlier.
BLO supervisors' pay has also been revised from ₹12,000 to ₹18,000. In a first, Electoral Registration Officers (ERO) and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AERO) will receive honorariums of ₹25,000 and ₹30,000 respectively — previously, they received nothing.
Additionally, BLOs in Bihar involved in the special intensive revision will be given a special incentive of ₹6,000.
The Commission emphasized that this decision acknowledges the vital role played by voter list staff — including EROs, AEROs, BLO supervisors, and BLOs — in maintaining free, fair, and transparent electoral rolls.
