Wayne Rooney admits he has "no faith" in Ruben Amorim after latest Man Utd loss

Wayne Rooney says has seen nothing to suggest Ruben Amorim will be able to turn things around at Manchester United after admitting he has "no faith" in the former Sporting Lisbon chief following Saturday's defeat at Brentford.

United were beaten 3-1 by the Bees, meaning Amorim is still yet to win successive Premier League games since he arrived at Old Trafford back in November. The Portuguese coach has managed just 34 points from the 33 league games he has overseen during that period and scrutiny is beginning to grow on the beleaguered United chief, whose refusal to deviate from his preferred 3-4-2-1 system has also raised eyebrows.

Although Amorim's torrid record continues to be questioned, the top brass at United insist they have no plans to replace their manager. But Rooney says he has not seen anything over the past 11 months to convince him that a turnaround is imminent.

“I just don’t know what’s going on,” the former England and Manchester United striker said on the latest edition of his new BBC podcast, . “I have tried my hand in management and it didn’t work out too well, I get it. Ruben Amorim is my age, he is still a young manager and I’m sure he still has a massive future.

“But what’s going on at Man United – this is not Man United. I honestly hope he can turn it around and he does. But if you’re saying to me: ‘Do you believe he will?’ then, after everything I’ve seen, honestly, I’ve got no faith in it.

“I am not seeing anything which is giving me any confidence. There needs to be big changes in my opinion. Manager, players, whatever that is. Whatever it takes to get Manchester United back.”

United spent in excess of £260million on new players in the summer, including £200m on three new attackers in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, who scored his first goal for the club in Saturday's chastening defeat at the Gtech Community Stadium.

While Rooney does not believe Amorim is the right person to fix the problems at United, he went on to make it clear that there are issues far beyond the manager, saying the "soul from the club has gone" in a brutally honest exchange.

“I don’t recognise the whole football club,” he added. “I don’t see players fighting, I don’t see character, I don’t see desire to win. I go to a game watching, expecting, here we go again – expecting the team to lose or maybe pick up a point.”

He continued: “It’s not even just results on the pitch. It’s everything about the club that needs fixing – Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos have walked into a real challenge. We’re seeing staff members getting sacked after 20, 30 years who are very important people to that football club.

“The soul has gone from the club. It needs a new engine, a new lease of life. It needs something to kickstart that football club.”
