Savannah International Airport evacuated after bomb threat as passengers stranded

A major airport has been desperately evacuated after a terrifying bomb threat, leaving passengers stranded and triggering a huge presence. Crowds of passengers at Savannah/Hilton Head Airport, Georgia, , were pictured hurrying out of the international today.

Some have reported being stranded on the tarmac amid the chaos ensuing from the security threat and sniffer have been spotted on site. Airport officials confirmed the bomb threat to local media and revealed the everybody was being evacuated from the building while checks were being carried out.

The airport warned passengers about the incoming disruption that would be triggered by the terrifying scare, saying: "Due to a security risk passengers should expect flight disruptions for this afternoon, Saturday, May 3rd." People were redirected to parking garages, local drivers were being rerouted around the airport, and flights due to come into Savannah were held at their origin destination.

Savannah Airport officials added: "Out of an abundance of caution, we are evacuating the terminal building. Passengers should proceed the parking garage areas. At this time all inbound roadway traffic is being rerouted away from the airport."

One passenger told the local outlet WSAV that they had been stranded on the runway for 20 minutes along with other aircrafts just shortly after the horrifying announcement.

Another flyer jumped on social media amid the chaos saying they had been stuck on a plane for over 40 minutes. The claimed little information was being shared as they tweeted the airport and said: "Flight crew isn’t getting any updates from your terminal.. what’s the latest? We’re stuck on tarmac for over 40 minutes."

One person said the evacuation did not just include flyers but also staff and agents inside the airport. Chilling footage caught by one stranded passenger, sat outside the airport, captured several police cars zooming to the Savannah Airport not long after people were forced to leave the site.

This has not been the first time a major US airport has been forced to evacuate all of its passengers and staff, throwing travel plans into disarray. A terminal at LaGuardia Airport in New York City had to be emptied after a bomb squad investigated a , on November 9, 2024.

The NYPD inspected but later dismissed concerns over the package and the terminal was reopened just a few hours later.

UK airports have also been affected by similar terrifying circumstances. Birmingham Airport was forced to amid reports of a possible bomb threat, in October 2024. Police told passengers not to go to the site after reports of a suspicious vehicle were raised.

Flyers landing into the airport at that time reported being stuck on the runway amid the chaos, but the incident later "concluded" and the site reopened to passengers.
