Mystery as man found dead on major motorway with cops probing 'unexplained' tragedy

Police are investigatingafter a man was found dead on a busy motorway. The “unexplained" tragedy saw emergency crews rush to the M90 northbound close to the junction from Rosyth in Fife, Scotland.

Crews respondedto “concern for a person” at around 8:15pm yesterday evening and reports indicate there were four emergency vehicles, including an ambulance, at the scene. Shortly after, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are treating the death as unexplained and are investigating. The motorway was shut in both directions before being reopened at 10:45pm last night.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 8.15pm on Saturday, 21 June, we received a report of concern for [a] person on the M90 northbound near junction 1C, Rosyth.

“Emergency services attended and a man was pronounced dead a short time later. The death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances. The motorway was closed and re-opened around 10:45pm.”

In January, a section of the M90 was closed after a fire. The Friarton Bridge in Perth was closed in the early hours of January 14 following a fire breaking out at a recycling centre, with smoke rising onto the carriageway.

The M90 is an important road in Scotland and is the northernmost motorway in the UK. It runs from close to Edinburgh to Perth.

Elsewhere on UK roads today, South Yorkshire Police were in attendance at a crash on the M1 near Barnsley. The crash occurred on the northbound carriageway near junction 36, Yorkshire Live reported. A diversion through Tankersley, Wortley Hall, Thurgoland and Silkstone was put in place for motorists to rejoin at junction 37.

A force spokesperson said: "Lane closure and long delays on M1. Please be aware that there may be long delays on the northbound carriageway of M1 between junctions 36 and 37 following a road traffic collision.

"Lanes 1 and 2 are currently closed, with only lane 3 open to drivers. Thank you for your patience and understanding."

Traffic data site Inrix said: "M1 Northbound closed, severe delays due to accident investigation work from J36 A61 (Barnsley South / Hoyland) to J37 A628 Whinby Road (Barnsley / Dodworth).

"The road has been closed for accident investigation work following an earlier accident. Diversion - via the exit slip road."

Two lanes were also closed on the M6 near Manchester today. There wer quese for drivers approaching junction 23 with queues going back towards Warrington and past junction 22 at Newton-le-Willows, the Manchester Evening News said.

"Two lanes closed and queueing traffic due to accident on M6 Northbound from J22 A49 Winwick Link Road (Newton Le Willows) to J23 A580 East Lancashire Road (Haydock)," an update from the Inrix traffic monitoring service said. "Lanes one and two (of four) are closed."

All lanes have since reopened.
