Feed roses in May with 3-ingredient mix to help them 'flower like crazy'

Send Push

Roses are set for a glorious bloom in late May, but only if they're properly fed as temperatures soar. The sunshine can drain essential nutrients from the soil leading to fewer and poorer quality rose buds.

expert Nell Foster, from Joyus Garden, has shared her top tip for ensuring rose bushes pump out big, lush flowers this season.

Nell advocates: "You need to feed annuals and roses two or three times during summer. They flower like crazy and need the nourishment to keep them flowering away."

Nell proposes alfalfa meal, a mild fertiliser hewn from alfalfa plants, which gifts roses with the nitrogen necessary for robust leaves and stems capable of supporting more substantial flowers.

This feed also includes natural minerals that can invigorate growth for a more vibrant floral display.

Moreover, chicken manure could be your secret weapon, providing not just nitrogen but also phosphorus for improved flower quality and hue, alongside potassium to encourage greater flower proliferation in your rose beds.

It's worth noting that it's best to purchase well-aged or well-composted manure, as fresh natural fertilisers are too potent and can scorch the rose roots.

This simple fertiliser naturally enhances growth by providing a good mix of nutrients and improving root water retention to help prevent the roses from drying out.

How to use organic fertiliser for roses

All you need to do is buy the ingredients from your local garden centre, then blend them together. You will roughly need about 120g of the mixture per rose bush.

Then apply a thin layer around the roses, but avoid the mixture touching the stem or any part of the plant.

After application, give your roses a deep watering, as it helps dissolve the nutrients into the soil.

Apply the fertiliser once every two months (roughly every eight weeks) from late spring to late summer to ensure you get bigger and more vibrant rose blooms throughout the flowering season.
