The dam gates have been opened up to an average height of 1.56 meters to allow safe flow of water.
Officials said that due to the water release, the water level in the Narmada River is expected to rise by up to 10 feet. People living in low-lying areas near the river have been put on alert. Authorities have asked them to stay away from the riverbanks and be ready to move to safer places if needed.
The release of water is part of regular flood management efforts as the region continues to receive heavy rainfall. The dam was nearing its full capacity due to the inflow from the upstream areas, making it necessary to release the extra water.
