In a bid to boost tourism in the state, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the newly built terminal of Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport in Patna on Thursday, marking the start of his two-day visit to the state.
Constructed at an estimated cost of ₹1,200 crore, the state-of-the-art terminal is designed to handle up to one crore passengers annually. With modern amenities and expanded capacity, the new facility is expected to greatly ease air travel congestion and support Patna’s growing passenger traffic.
In a parallel move aimed at future-proofing regional aviation infrastructure, the Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for a new civil enclave at Bihta Airport, west of Patna. This ₹1,410 crore project will serve the fast-growing Bihta area, which is evolving into an educational and institutional hub, home to IIT Patna and a proposed NIT campus.
The Prime Minister’s itinerary reflects a broader push to enhance Bihar’s development landscape. On May 30, Modi will travel to Karakat, where he will inaugurate and lay foundation stones for a series of development initiatives totalling more than ₹48,520 crore. These projects span key sectors including infrastructure, energy, education, and employment generation.
Among the marquee announcements is the foundation stone for Stage II of the Nabinagar Super Thermal Power Project in Aurangabad district. With an investment exceeding ₹29,930 crore, the 3x800 MW power plant is poised to bolster energy security in Bihar and eastern India. It promises to accelerate industrial growth, create local job opportunities, and ensure more stable and affordable electricity for millions.
The Prime Minister’s visit also saw vibrant public enthusiasm. In Patna, thousands lined the streets to witness a spirited roadshow as Modi’s motorcade journeyed from Aranya Bhawan near the airport to the state BJP headquarters on Birchand Patel Marg. Supporters showered flower petals, chanted patriotic slogans, and captured the moment on their phones as the Prime Minister waved to the crowd.
Modi arrived in Patna from West Bengal and is staying at the Raj Bhavan for the night. He is expected to hold strategic discussions with state BJP leaders later in the evening.
The back-to-back announcements and high-energy public reception underscore the growing momentum behind Bihar’s infrastructure renaissance, setting the stage for a new chapter in the state’s development trajectory.
