Actress Samantha Ruth Prabhu has always been an advocate for change in the film industry, and her latest comments shed light on the ongoing issue of gender pay disparity. In an insightful interview with Foodpharmer, Samantha shared her experience of being paid significantly less than her male co-stars, despite having equally demanding roles in the same films.
Pay Disparity in the Industry
Samantha recalled her past experiences, stating, "I have been in many films where, not really sure why, but you’re paid dramatically different salaries for the same number of days and the same kind of role." She acknowledged that in big hero-driven films, there’s often a rationale for a pay difference, given that the male lead might have a larger draw at the box office.
However, she pointed out that in several projects, where both she and her male counterparts had equally challenging roles, the pay disparity was still evident. “I do understand that there’s a difference. But there are also films where it was an equally demanding role, and there was still this stark difference," she added.
Aiming for Equal Pay with Tralala Moving Pictures
Samantha’s commitment to addressing this issue is evident through her production company, Tralala Moving Pictures. She revealed that her vision for her production house is to ensure that everyone, regardless of gender, receives equal pay for equal work. This shift in perspective comes after years of navigating an industry where such inequalities are still prevalent. She stated, “15 years I have been in the industry and what I try to do right now is to not repeat the mistakes that were apparent to me.”
By founding Tralala Moving Pictures, Samantha is setting a precedent in the industry, where pay equity is still a major issue. She wants to ensure that the mistakes she encountered don't repeat for others, particularly as she takes on leadership in shaping future projects.
Focusing on the Future and Purpose
For Samantha, this issue is personal. She shared her mantra for life: “You have to put your weight behind things that bother you. I do believe that you will find your purpose in the things that bother you.” She explained that while she may not be able to change her past, she can use her experiences to create a better future for others in the industry. "That in my lifetime, I can’t do anything about my situation. But I can do something about the future. And if I don’t, who will?"
Samantha, who was last seen in the spy thriller Citadel: Hunny Bunny alongside Varun Dhawan, is preparing for her return to the small screen in the much-anticipated The Family Man Season 3.
