Chelsea handed bargain transfer after Lyon shock relegation confirmed and talks held

Chelseacould be handed a major transfer boost thanks to a decision involving Lyon, which has been announced.

It was confirmed on Tuesday night that Lyon had been relegated from Ligue 1 down to Ligue 2, the second tier of French football, subject to appeal. The decision was made after several French clubs were examined by the Direction Nationale du Controle de Gestion (DNCG) over their financial health.

The decision has been made after Lyon's financial situation did not improve, with the French club now relegated to Ligue 2.

Lyon reported debts of around €500 million (£418m) in 2024. Eagle Football Group, the consortium that owns French side, used several levers to try and persuade the DNCG that the situation at the club had been sufficiently addressed. These changes included the sale of Textor’s stake in Crystal Palace and Lyon’s women’s team to Michelle Kang but none of the these changes met DNCG's requirements.

Lyon have the right to appeal the decision, which if the outcome remains the same could have major ramifications across European football, which may include Chelsea.

If Lyon are forced to play in Ligue 2 next season, they could be forced to sell some of their star players to raise funds.

Manchester City have already completed the £31million signing of Rayan Cherki, and more players could be forced to head for the exit door.

One such player could be Malick Fofana, who has been heavily linked with Chelsea in recent weeks. football.london understands that the Blues have already made initial contactwith Lyon about a possible move for Fofana this summer.

Fofana plays on the left wing for Lyon, a position which Chelsea are keen to strengthen this summer. The Blues are also looking to sign Borussia Dortmund star Jamie Gittens, as they prepare to build their squad for the new Premier League season and the return of Champions League football.

A deal for Gittens appears to be moving closer, so it remains to be seen if Chelsea would want to sign both players this summer.

Given Lyon's potential financial situation, though, it could present the Blues with an opportunity to take advantage of the market.
