Chelsea chiefs set up Wesley Fofana meeting after defender's latest driving offence

Chelsea have reportedly spoken with defender Wesley Fofana after he was slapped with 300 hours of community service for dangerous driving. The French centre-half received the sentence after pleading guilty to an offence committed in April, and made a court appearance last week.

Footage of the incident has been released by the Crown Prosecution Service, showing it took place not far from Chelsea's Cobham training ground. The 24-year-old has faced backlash, prompting Chelsea to intervene.

As per The Athletic, the Blues believed Fofana's actions warranted a meeting. He had previously been hit with a driving ban in May for unrelated speeding offences, with the ban starting in May and set to last until May 13, 2027.

He was given a separate 18-month driving ban following the most recent dangerous driving charge. The Athletic further reports that district judge Julie Cooper imposed a penalty of £85 costs and a £114 victim surcharge.

"At the end of the disqualification you cannot drive until you pass an extended driving test and if you drive as a disqualified driver you will almost certainly be sent to prison and that is career-ending," Judge Cooper is reported to have said, reports the Mirror.

Road safety charity Brake has also weighed in on the issue. "It is disappointing to see people disregarding speeding restrictions and not giving the road and road users the full respect they need," Brake's Luca Straker told The Athletic. "Every car is a large piece of machinery that has the capacity to kill or seriously injure someone.

"Every day, we see the devastating consequences of road crashes through our work with families needing the support of our National Road Victim Service. It is important for any person in a position of influence to act responsibly in these situations, so that those who look up to them can follow their example."

Fofana made the switch to Chelsea from Leicester for an initial £70million back in 2022, though his spell at Stamford Bridge has been plagued by fitness problems. The defender sat out the whole of the 2023/24 season following an ACL rupture and has featured just six times this term - with only four of those appearances coming in the Premier League.

He was also named in the starting XI for the Blues' most recent Champions League fixture, a commanding 5-1 triumph over Ajax at Stamford Bridge. The reigning Conference League holders now face a journey to Azerbaijan for their next European assignment against Qarabag.
